From Pathos to Logos: Strategies for Creating Engaging Media

Engaging media begins with tapping into the realms of emotions, logic, and credibility—known as pathos, logos, and ethos, respectively. Each of these components is crucial for media to resonate successfully. Personally, when consuming media, I find myself drawn to pathos and ethos the most. I seek credibility in what I engage with, alongside a deep emotional connection.

This principle applies universally. For instance, my Innovation Plan centers around educators participating in a blended learning leadership program called EMPOWER.  Failure to roll out this program with captivating media could significantly hinder its success. Teachers need to feel excited about this program, and that begins with the question: Does it LOOK exciting? The site to apply for the program needs to be engaging with an appealing color scheme and aesthetics. Furthermore, the presentations and PD as a whole must be interactive and dynamic. The information the program provides must be applicable and useful, making teachers feel inspired and innovative.  Lastly, as the presenter, I must establish my credibility in educational technology and blended learning while resonating with the values and beliefs of the teachers. Educators have a keen eye for authenticity and are the kings and queens of sniffing out someone who doesn’t know their stuff!

Overall, media that engages may involve techniques such as storytelling, visual appeal, personalization, multi-sensory experiences, etc. However, at its core, it's about connecting with our audience on a deeper level—appealing to their beliefs, logic, and emotions. Engaging media is simply understanding the art of persuasion.
